Today, when several isssues concern policy-makers and academics alike, these definitions of the sub-field are inadequate. In this chapter, I have suggested that by focusing on the mobilisation of ethnicity or what is understood to be racial affinity, in a society that incorporates groups of people differentially, we are able to understand better the changing emphases and situations of relations between groups of people who see themselves, and are seen by others, to be different. The mobilisation of ethnicity or racial affinity as a political currency has certainly been a norm of social and political life in post-imperial Britain.
