The succession being no longer at issue, the war which Catalonia now continued against Spain alone came to be seen as a defence of Catalan liberties. After withstanding a siege by French and Spanish troops for over a year, Barcelona was compelled to surrender on 11 September 1714. In the twentieth century the date of 11 September was chosen as the Catalan national day. Philip V finally abolished all Catalan political institutions by right of conquest, and imposed Castilian laws, absolutism, and centralism.

The kings, The Origins of Catalonia 13 who resided at the Court in Madrid, tended to summon the Catalan Corts less and less frequently. Under Charles I they met eight times, under Philip II only twice, under Philip III once, and on the two occasions when they were summoned by Philip IV, in 1626 and 1632, they ended in failure without the grievances against royal functionaries having been repaired or the grant of money requested by the Crown having been submitted to a vote. After this the parliament did not meet at all again until 1701.

Councillors, who were normally nobles, were designated by the Crown for life to head the local councils, putting an end to the participation of the merchants, members of the liberal professions, craftsmen, and shopkeepers who had previously been appointed periodically by drawing lots. Seigniorial rights, on the other hand, were maintained intact throughout most of the country. By presentday standards, the former system had not been democratic, but the popular classes became much further removed from political institutions from 1714 onwards.
