S . capitol, even though the cast members and the main crew never left California during the seven weeks of shooting. T h e entire film is shot in black and white (Wise at that time had yet to make a color film), and that m e d i u m is used to good atmospheric effect. In particular, low-key lighting and dramatic shadows are used to build tension and to create a sense of suspense, m u c h in the m o d e of the German expressionist predecessors of American science fiction film but also in the m a n n e r of American film noir, a genre to w h i c h Wise made important contributions in such films as The Set-Up, The House on Telegraph Hill (1951), and Somebody Up There Likes Me (1956).
H o w ever, from the perspective of our later digital age, this technology (which still includes a n u m b e r of analog devices such as dials and switches) seems oddly clunky.
