Countries like Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Israel, Saudi Arabia, and others, although part of geographical Asia, are viewed as belonging to a separate entity, the Middle East. The problem that scholars face in defining Asia is compounded by the fact that even UN agencies differ in their approach, with some defining Asia more narrowly than others to exclude the Arabian Peninsula, the Caucasus, Iran, and the Near East (Turkey, Israel, Palestinian territories, Jordan, Iraq, Syria, and Lebanon) from their Asian assessments.

The drying up of the Aral Sea in Central Asia owing to the heavy withdrawals of water for irrigation from its sources, the Amu Darya and Syr Darya rivers, exemplifies the consequences of an unchecked overextraction of water resources. In addition to the widespread problem of river depletion and pollution, some Asian areas have become so dependent on groundwater supply that this resource is being used faster than it can naturally be replenished, which is resulting in a rapidly falling groundwater saturation level.
